The Brick Connection - The Disney Castle

The Brick Connection – A novice Lego fan explores the great brick world of LEGO

Oh boy! (*said in Mickey Mouse voice) Do we have a topic for you girls and boys! It’s almost magical.

You know, after you spend a whole week talking about a baby version of a children’s toy and then another week just blogging about someone else’s blog, you think to yourself, have I run out of things to talk about?

And just when you think you’ve exhausted every possible LEGO topic you could without actually playing with LEGO something awesome happens. The LEGO gods (the LEGO Group) bless you with this wonderful announcement:

The Disney Castle

Whaaaaaat?!

A LEGO version of the iconic Disney World Resort Cinderella castle?!?!

Yes, the real-life replica of the cartoon Cinderella castle now has its own replica; a LEGO one. As you can see from the picture above, it’s a stunning resemblance with great attention to detail.

Speaking of detail, here are the deets on this castle set:

This set is a part of the Disney Princess theme. And the Disney Princess theme is NOT MESSING AROUND!

The set has 4,080 pieces and when built, the castle stand at over 29 inches high and 17 inches wide.

The set is suggested for ages 16 and up, which is the highest age recommendation I’ve ever seen for LEGO.

Here is LEGO’s description from their website:

Welcome to the magical Disney Castle!

Cross the stone bridge and enter the arched doorway to a place where dreams come true. This delightful LEGO® replica of the Walt Disney World® Resort Cinderella Castle is full of authentic details for you to explore. Step into the grand main hall with its mosaic-tiled floor, suits of armor, wall-mounted shields, grandfather clock, ornate chandelier and golden lamp, then venture through a myriad of beautifully detailed rooms featuring familiar decorative details. Create your own Disney adventures with the 5 included minifigures: Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck and Tinker Bell, or add characters from your own collection for endless play scenarios. From its intricate facade, ornate balconies and flag-adorned towers, to the soaring golden-spired main tower complete with fireworks function, this amazing model features unsurpassed detail and magical surprises that will set your imagination free!

It will be released on September 1st and will retail for $349.99.

Pricey, yes; but actually it comes out to about 8.6 cents per piece. The average LEGO piece costs 10.4 cents. Therefore the set is actually well priced. And I mean, it is freakin’ huge man! What do you expect?

A comparable-sized set I think is the Death Star set, which has been retired. It came out in 2008 at a price of $399.99. And it was only 3800 pieces. So 8 years later for $50 less and 280 more pieces you get The Disney Castle set.

Now some will say that this is the first semi-expert LEGO set marketed to females. And while yes, the princess theme would lean more towards girls, who doesn’t love Disney??? And why do we assume that only boys are interested in building a giant Death Star. Who doesn’t love Star Wars???

As amazing as I think this set is, personally I couldn’t spend that much money on a LEGO set, and not just because I’m cheap. I do not have the experience and know-how necessary to attempt a build like this. I mean I’d love to try. And I’m pretty stubborn. Given enough time (like a year or two), I’m sure I could eventually get it done.

For now I think I’ll stick to figuring out DUPLO sets…

Back to the Castle.

While the front looks amazing, the fun part is in the back where the castle is open and you can see inside all the rooms.

Even though this is the Cinderella castle, (not to be confused with the Sleeping Beauty castle in Disney Land), a lot of the most famous Disney films are represented in this set: Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Fantasia, Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin, Snow White, Tangled, and more.

This video is really great at showing you what’s on each floor, in each room, and noting the Disney films that are represented:

So there it is! The Disney Castle LEGO set. Also of note, it comes with 5 minifigures: Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Daisy Duck, and Tinkerbell.

The Mickey, Minnie, and Daisy minifigures are all different from the ones released for the Minifigure series. Tinkerbell was not in the Minifigure series. Donald looks the same. I guess he doesn’t have many different looks. Donald and I have that in common.

Until next time…isn’t it funny that if you happen to already be near or in Orlando, Florida it’s actually a lot cheaper to get a ticket into the park to see the real castle than to buy this LEGO replica?
